Appearance:  History: Thanatos' Hades Wiki & Traditional Greek Mythology Description CR AU (Optional): N/A Personality: Positive Trait: Compassionate: Above all things, Death is compassionate. While Thanatos might seem imposing and scary, he's probably one of the calmer and kinder Gods you encounter in Hades. Yes, he's the God of Death and it's his role to fetch mortals to the underworld upon dying and stop those who try to escape it- Yet it is stated that his touch is a gentle one, likened to that of his brother Sleep. He comments that he enjoys meeting the mortals in their last moments and helping them to accept death even though it is an immensely tiring job that never ends. Unlike Ares, the God of War, and Zeus King of the Olympians, Thanatos takes no pleasure in punishing and killing for fun. While he respects that they both get their jobs done, he doesn't always approve of their methods and chooses to take a gentler approach. Samples of Thanatos' kindness and compassion can be seen in some of the dialogue he has with other members of the House of Hades. Though his delivery is often deadpan and borderline annoyed sounding, he offers advice to his twin brother, Hypnos and though their relationship is strained, manages to convince Hades to give him the job of cataloging the shades and their causes of death. He's often found giving his brother advice to help him keep said job, even if his delivery is a little dry. During Zagreus' escapes, Thanatos often shows up out of nowhere and helps the Prince fight off Hade's hoards of wretches, sent to stop him from reaching the surface. He does this under the ruse of challenging him to a duel, and yet he never causes the Prince damage and in fact, takes out a lot of the enemies that would have no doubt wounded or even killed the Prince. It might not sound like much of a kindness, but Thanatos is risking his neck by helping Zagreus like this, it's open defiance of Hade's wishes and he's even pulled up and chastised for it at one point. Negative Trait: Workaholic/Dutybound: I feel that, although this doesn't seem like a terrible trait to have initially, it's actually a double-edged sword when it comes to Thanatos. When work and duty are honored above all else, it leaves no time for himself and others. When work and duty is he has known, how can he know himself and his own wants? Due to the nature of his role, Thanatos simply can't stop working. Being the God of Death, if he slacked on his job it would mean mortals would pile up and live longer, and possibly through some terrible pain and suffering, as well as letting wretches escape and wreak horror on the mortal realm. He knows it's a selfless title and causes him to be alone and away from his friends and family for most of his existence, but this is a heavy sacrifice he dutifully accepts. No one escapes the Underworld and on the occasion that Zagreus does, he can't remain there for long without dying, meaning that Thanatos is destined to be alone in his work, be it in the Underworld or the surface realm. Often Thanatos will end conversations by stating that he has to fetch a mortal, implying someone was about to die and he was needed, or if the conversation has been quite long, he'll tell you he has to go, as his work is piling up. It's a thankless role but he understands the importance of it. I think this is his most negative trait as it's clear he wants to have friends and possibly a lover but he has no time to do so. Death waits, for no one, after all... Negative Trait: Doubtful: After so many encounters with the Prince, dialog is unlocked when Thanatos has received a number of nectar drinks that he starts to question the Prince's intentions in giving him such extravagant gifts. He understands how the contraband is a very rare and wonderful thing to be given and yet he seems in doubt as to why he's worthy of it. It's like the only thing he has confidence in, is his job and how well he does it. Even when assisting Zagreus with his attempted escapes, he questions and doubts why he's doing so, considering the trouble he could get in and the fact that if the Prince does actually manage to leave the underworld, it would mean he wouldn't get to see him as often. And so he doubts himself and his feelings, helping the Prince rather than trusting his emotions and stopping Zagreus from leaving. There is also a conversation with his twin brother, Hypnos, where Thanaos questions if he did the right thing in convincing Hades to give his sibling a job in the first place. Catching the God of Sleep, well, sleeping on the job a few times and doubting if he was capable of the role. Likewise, you can catch him talking to his mother, Nyx, Goddess of Darkness and Night about if what he is doing in helping Zagreus is the right thing to do, seeking her advice as he's at a loss with himself on the topic. Negative Trait: Affectionstarved It's stated in his codex that Thanatos has no father and he greatly honors his mother Nyx, but his relationship with his other siblings is distant or strained at best. Charon, is his strange older brother, the ferryman that brings mortals to the Underworld via the river Styx and a merchant of boons obsessed with coin, he's an ancient skeletal-like creature who only gurgles noises, and his younger twin brother Hypnos, is often asleep or busy being playful and unserious. Thanatos has very little in common with either of them. It's also mentioned that his sisters are the Three Fates but again he rarely sees them if at all. If you go down the romance route with Zagreus, early on he admits that he doesn't always trust what feelings say, implying he's not used to people being emotional or affectionate with him, or him with them. Thanatos spends a lot of time on his own and away from everyone else which makes him almost guarded when the Prince tries to court him. Seeing as he has very little time, due to his role, he wonders why Zagreus wants to take his time with the relationship, stating that, if he likes him why not act on it? Completely missing the point that the Prince wants to date him properly, and take time to get to know one another. Time is precious for him, time is something he understands, affection? Not so much. Thanatos will often become flustered or tonguetied when Zagreus openly flirts with him, stumbling over his words and unable to articulate his thoughts which in turn causes him frustration and annoyance, often leaving the conversation abruptly and leaving the poor Prince calling after him to wait. Clearly, he wants to be affectionate but he doesn't know how to let down his guard or reciprocate it when it's given. Powers and Abilities: ๐ Thanatos is the Greek personification of death, this means that has total and complete control over death and dying. He is able to kill a mortal with a mere touch. However, considering that would be game-breaking, I understand he will have that power fully nerfed in-game. ๐ Thanatos has the ability to levitate and is often seen hovering and floating rather than walking. ๐ He also has the ability to teleport to different locations. I understand this power may be nerfed too. ๐ Thanatos fights with a huge death scythe that he can conjure out of thin air and summon to his side. Inventory: 1. Death Scythe. 2.
